UHF RFID antennas

The antenna defines the read zone. Its gain, polarisation and orientation decide what gets read and, just as importantly, what does not.

Three criteria separate the models:

  • Circular or linear polarisation: circular when tag orientation varies, linear for maximum range on an oriented tag
  • Gain in dBi, which extends range but narrows the beam
  • IP rating and temperature range for outdoor or cold installations

An over-powered antenna reads pallets in the next aisle and corrupts the stock count. Tuning usually means reducing power, not increasing it.
