Handheld Barcode Scanners

Handheld scanners cover the vast majority of scanning needs at the till, in goods-in and in order picking. The operator aims, presses, and the code lands in the software.

The points to look at before choosing:

• 2D imager or 1D laser: laser costs less but reads neither DataMatrix nor phone screens
• Corded or Bluetooth: cordless pays off as soon as the item cannot come to the workstation
• Drop resistance in metres onto concrete, and IP rating for dust and water

On a fixed station scanning all day, a corded 2D unit remains the best reliability-to-price ratio. Bluetooth buys mobility, not scanning speed.
