DPM scanners for direct part marking

DPM refers to codes etched, dot-peened or laser-marked directly onto the part. These scanners decode them where a standard scanner sees only a reflection.

Three criteria separate the models:

  • Multiple diffuse lighting, which brings out contrast on polished metal
  • Reading distance, very short on most DPM models
  • Supported marking types: dot peen, laser, inkjet, electrochemical

A standard 2D scanner sometimes reads an etched DataMatrix, on a good part at the right angle. In production, that hit-and-miss reading costs more than the right scanner.
